Accessible Parks and Playgrounds in Albany:

ACCESSIBLE PLAYGROUND: Eyre Park

Eyre Park is a five-minute drive from Middleton Beach. This playground is suitable for all people, disability, or no. There is a cement path that leads from the smaller carpark, next to the fully accessible, shaded BBQ and picnic area, all the way around the park, to each piece of play equipment. Whilst some of the playground is inaccessible for wheelchairs, most of it is connected through sealed paths.

Eyre Park does, however, have a disabled accessible flying fox swing chair, making sure that all can be included in this playground. The path around the park is frequented by carers and those with a mobility disability as it leads to a small bridge that crosses over a duck pond and around toward the toilet block off to the right.

The block has both male and female assigned sides, with wheelchair friendly facilities. This park/playground is an extremely accessible and friendly playground for all and is only going to get more accessible as time goes on (as of 2022, the first stage of accessibility has been completed).

Accessible Beaches:

Middleton Beach:

One of Albany's most popular beaches, Middleton Beach, is extremely wheelchair friendly. Middleton Beach offers a completely accessible cafe/restaurant, many disabled parking spaces across the area. The parking across from the Surf Life Saving Club has a direct line to a disabled bathroom. This bathroom is slightly hidden along the side of the building, next to a wooden wall that holds posters and signs. It is a simple silver door with the word "disabled" written on a silver label. Just to the left as soon as you get to the restroom, you will be met with a wooden wall that holds information and a number to call if you're in need of all terrain, beach access wheelchairs.

There are two types of wheelchairs available; a Beach Trekker 'all terrain' wheelchair, which is land and water based, but will not float; And the Beach Access wheelchair, which can also be used on land and in water. Users must be aware that this wheelchair will float in water and may not be suitable for people with high support needs because of this. - Security's 24-hour service number; 0417 964 102

Continuing along the main path, toward Three Anchors Cafe/restaurant, a fully accessible place to dine whether it be for a simple coffee and cake or a meal. Three Anchors has both indoors and outdoor seating perfect for almost any occasion. Just next this simple cafe is another fully accessible bathroom block. This block contains both male and female rooms, both fully equip for any individual. It is accessible by a ramp to the left of Three Anchors.

Middleton beach has an accessible boardwalk with picturesque views of the harbour, but it is not advised to trek up the slight hill without a carer or guardian accompaniment.

Emu Point

Albany's other most popular beach, Emu Point, is extremely accessible, having wheelchair beach access via ramp, all terrain wheelchair hire, and an accessible cafe. Emu point also has two disabled parking spaces right next to the Emu point cafe. To access the cafe, go around the front door to the right, you will see a ramp leading up to the cafe with tables overlooking the water.

Going down the ramp and around to the right side of the cafe, there is a fully accessible toilet block. This block has an accessible male and female side, equipped with functional toilets, and a disabled only bathroom as well.

At the front of the cafe, to the right, there is a small, pale, rectangular box holding the information and number to a 24 Hr hire for an all-terrain wheelchair. The beach is accessible with use of this wheelchair, by a ramp just across the grass from the cafe.

Unfortunately Emu Point's playground is inaccessible to those in wheelchairs. The grass can be ventured upon, but the play equipment is extremely limited and surrounded by a sandpit.

Accessible Outdoor Attractions:

Princess Royal Fortress:

Princess Royal Fortress Military Museum sits atop Mount Adelaide, overlooking Albany's King George Sound. Princess Royal Fortress has a menagerie of sights and facilities, most of which are accessible. Starting with the museum gift shop off the right-hand side as you enter. The gift shop has an easy ramp to guide you through the front door, where you are met with many wonderous trinkets and treasures.

This beautiful little shop has a table covered with goodies hand-made from local produce. Just across from the gift shop is Garrisons restaurant, this restaurant has one entry way which is wheelchair friendly. The interior is fairly small but can be navigated through with some help. To the right of the Garrisons restaurant, is the National ANZAC Centre (NAC), where you may purchase tickets for the museum. The NAC has a nice flat ramp/walkway to the doorway, completely wheelchair accessible, and further up has another ramp leading down to the well-kept grounds below.

This pathway and set of ramps is completely wheelchair friendly and leads to some beautiful sights. Sadly, the Princess Royal Fortress is inaccessible unless you have an all-terrain wheelchair and carer, as the ground is not sealed, but is instead hard rocky granite. This is a letdown as the fortress has many cool sights that we wish we could share with all people.

The toilet block on the side of the museum is sadly not accessible. Anyone requiring an accessible toilet block will need to enter the National ANZAC Centre, where they have fully accessible toilets and changing facilities. Mount Adelaide has two disabled parking spaces suitable for those eligible, and many other parking spaces as well.
